The traditional apprenticeship model, which was once a key method for gaining skills, has sadly diminished over time, leaving young people without valuable hands-on experiences. Apprenticeships are essential in closing the skills gap in the construction sector, offering practical training and guidance that help individuals develop the necessary technical and interpersonal skills for success. 

 

In response to this issue, Legend Pipeline Foundation offers, hands-on learning opportunities for youth to learn underground construction from beginning to end. This program not only focuses on practical construction work but also emphasizes the importance of soft skills such as problem-solving and taking initiative. The main objective is for young people to understand the various career paths within the construction industry and appreciate its significant impact on society.​

 

Jonathan Sandavol identifies the negative perception of the construction industry as a key factor contributing to its lack of diversity. He points to both stereotypes and the actual lack of diversity within the sector as reasons for this discrepancy. In addition to misconceptions, the industry's reputation for being difficult may discourage potential newcomers. Jonathan stresses the importance of transforming the industry to be more inclusive, including efforts to expand education and redefine work culture, particularly in order to appeal to Gen Z, and other underrepresented groups.​

 

"We need to recognize that our industry lacks diversity and has a reputation for being difficult to work in," he explains. "However, it doesn't have to be this way. If we want to appeal to Gen Z, women, and other underrepresented groups, we must be willing to change the way we do business. It's time for us to modernize and adapt to the times." He emphasizes the importance of industry professionals connecting with schools and career fairs, suggesting that companies move beyond traditional booth setups. Instead, he encourages them to create interactive exhibits showcasing the industry's progressive technology and innovation. By making construction more accessible and engaging, we can attract a broader range of talented individuals.
